Sustainable Development Goals
Biophilic Design isn’t just about pretty plants and nice wall paint colours, it is about using design to create healthy, inspiring environments for LIFE. Biophilic Design aims to use sustainable materials by default as we encourage use of wood grain, plants to reduce VOCs, air flow through windows, better acoustics, natural lighting and so on.
By encouraging us all to be more mindful of how we bring nature into the way we design our homes, workplaces, hospitals, schools, towns and cities we will have a phenomenal and beneficial impact on our health and wellbeing which in turn will have a positive impact on the environment. By improving the quality of our planet we will have a better quality of life on so many levels. “I see Biophilic Design as a cyclical design concept. We create healthier environments to live, work and play in we will encourage a respect and understanding of the beauty of nature by bringing plant life closer to our daily spaces, bringing the simple pleasure of fresh air to our families through an open window, better tunable lighting at work needing less energy, healthier paints with less VOCs creating less CO2 and pollutants into the atmosphere… the list goes on.” Dr Vanessa Champion, editor, Journal of Biophilic Design, Member of the United Nations Association - UK.
At the Journal of Biophilic Design we strive to uphold and support the UN Sustainable Development goals, focussing particularly on 7 of them as illustrated here (credit the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs).
We also support the United Nations Decade on Ecosystems Restoration.
“There has never been a more urgent need to revive damaged ecosystems than now. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. It can help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent a mass extinction. It will only succeed if everyone plays a part.”
The power of good and trusted media which is based on research and industry knowledge and experience can really help share ideas, inspiration, examples and truth. The birth of our Journal arose out of a need to accelerate awareness of just how important Biophilic design is and its ability to specify and create most sustainable and regenerative environments for people and this beautiful planet we are on. This paragraph from a paper prepared by the secretariat for Ocean Action Panel 1: Conserving, sustainably managing and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems including deep-sea ecosystems shared on the Ocean decade website shows how important media can play in helping transmit voices to where they need to be. We are here to help disseminate the understanding and awareness of Biophilic Design. Reach out if we can help you or if you have ideas how we can augment the message.
If we implement Biophilic design in cities, in towns and villages we will be taking greater strides in helping clean the air we breathe and circulates this planet and clean the water that runs into the Ocean.
